PRINCIPLES OF ATTACKING (playing offense)
1. To get Penetration:
A. Getting the ball behind the opponents (defenders).
B. It is the primary role of the first attacker.
2. To get Depth:
A. Organize players behind and in front of the first attacker to get Depth in the attack.
B. It is the Primary role of the second attacker.
3. To provide Mobility:
A. Attacking players need to penetrate and unbalance the opponents (defenders) so the offense is Mobile.
B. It is the primary role of the third attacker.
4. To provide Width:
A. Attacking players need to spread out across the field to pull apart the opponent (defenders) team defense.
ROLE OF FIRST ATTACKER:
1. The first attacker is the player with the ball. He is the most important player on the field.
2. His primary goal is to penetrate the defense by making the best tactical decision (shoot-pass-dribble).
ROLE OF SECOND ATTACKER (CAN BE SEVERAL PLAYERS):
1. The second attacker is the player in immediate support of the first attacker. It does not have to be the player nearest however.
2. His position is based on the pressure being put on the first attacker (can be behind, in front of or square to).
3. His position must be based on insuring that one defender can not defend both first and second attackers.
4. His primary goal is to assist the first attacker to achieve the goal of penetration (overlap runs, wall passes, etc ).
ROLE OF THIRD ATTACKER (IS ALWAYS SEVERAL PLAYERS):
1. The third attackers goal is to unbalance the opponent by making constructive runs to increase options, spreading out the field, generally away from the ball.
